I’m going to start at the end, crossing the finish line of any race, particularly one in which you ran up a mountain, brings with it a euphoric sense of accomplishment, adrenaline, and satisfaction. Usually about 10-15 minutes later I’m already thinking, did I give it all I had? Maybe I could do this faster next year? What’s next? That really wasn't so bad. Crazy. There’s an energy at the starting line of a race that’s unique. Strangers gathered around dealing with the pre-race jitters, nervous energy, some going over mental preparation for the race, others making a last second dash to the port-o-potty, last minute checks of gear or applications of Vasoline. Pikes Peak is no different, and with a smaller field (entrance is limited to 2 waves for the Ascent and Marathon based on qualifications), there’s a stronger sense of camaraderie. Yep, we’re all about to run up that mountain in the distance. Yep, it looks really tall, and really far away. Yep, we are indeed all really crazy – we volunteered for this!

How do you train for a half marathon up Pikes Peak, with an elevation gain of 7,815 feet over 13.32 miles to a summit of 14,115 feet, when you live in Austin, Texas? You run. A lot. That's why I did to prepare for this year's race, one of the craziest things I've ever done. Certainly the most physically challenging. How did I get interested in this race? I was working on my 2010 plan (yep, I have a plan, don’t you???), and as I was going through my fitness section, I was contemplating races to train for and goals to set. My friend Eric called and asked if I was interested in running this race – signs up are in March, and the race is in August – it fills quickly I remember him saying. I had recently finished my first half marathon, and I’ve run all of my adult life. I like a good challenge – sure I’m in. Remember this was early in the year - August - that was a long way off.
